Long time no see!

Guuuhhh my last blog was in Nov!? Whoops, didn't mean to disappear on ya-- I think I had a post-holidays-antisocial-phase, and then all of Chicago had a 102.5° fever, and then I was trapped inside the cyber dimension programming til 3am every night for awhile, and then the Fed SS invaded Minneapolis and started shooting protestors, so I couldn't write anything but strings of expletives for a few weeks... but yeah anyway, hello again friends. Here's what's new.

Whoa they're actually letting me publish it??

After several weeks of dev licenses and approvals, the Steam store page for Maple Blade is finally up!!

Pls wishlist it so other folks might see it 🙏

Here's the trailer-- lotta new stuff since the demo, especially the soundtrack by Tim Myers!!

The full game will be out on PC in late April for five bucks!! Or you could wait until I do a sale, then it'll be FOUR bucks or even THREE bucks omg value city

Cutie pic:

Kathryn and I saw Phantom at the Cadillac Palace theatre and the cast was so young and so talented it was like the world's best highschool musical

I'm jamming to:

sing WELL

There's something really intoxicating about riding a bike on the lakefront during Fools' Spring to this kinda shit

I'm thankful for:

Seeing friends again after being AWOL for so long!! Timmy and I are back on our biweekly Gold Star nights, saw Sanjee & Friends the other day, and a few of us went to a Takuya Nakamura show last weekend and it was the first time I'd seen some of them in months, not for lack of trying... blehh. I gotta be better about reaching out lol

Citypic of the month(s):

Been messing around with my old Canon and some handmedown lenses! Took this from Montrose last month. Uploaded a higher res version here if you wanna try to find my building in there lol

I watched:

A Minecraft Movie (2025) with Hannah and Steven-- it was Hannah's idea and she's never even played the game. It is *not a good movie*, but we were several beers deep so it was an enjoyable shitshow. Sorta reminded me of this. Half the dialogue was Jack Black shouting minecraft vocab. Slime cube

Todd:

As you can tell by the couch, he does this often

I'm looking forward to / Talent Show:

Seeya next month, promise!! ;)

Maple Blade - Halloween Demo !!!

My Halloween game is out!! Or at least, the pre-alpha demo of it. Play it right in your browser!

Maple Blade is an autumnal mystery-dungeon-style game where you rescue a cat from a haunted forest. It has a cute little story, a serenely spooky setting, and it builds a new level every time you play.

If you're wondering where I've been, or why I haven't be easy to get ahold of lately, it's because I was locked inside my computer programming this stupid thing. You can read more about its design and development here!

I'm jamming to:

Chill city night music via my buddy Pete's playlist. Weirdest most convoluted name of any song

Behold:

Pumpk

I watched:

The VVitch (2015) with Kathryn! She watched it through her fingers. I wouldn't say I *enjoyed* the movie, but the acting/writing was great, and I've never seen an ending like that before! Good scary Halloween flick. Personally I would like to live deliciously, idk about u

Featured citypic:

I'm thankful for:

Our city continuing to fight back against the federal government's extrajudicial kidnapping/detention of citizens and migrants, and also the fact that the CTA bill passed!

Todd update:

He discovered my computer's heat vent, and decided I was done working for a little while.

I'm looking forward to:

Finishing the full version of Maple Blade, seeing some buddies soon, and seeing my fam at Thanksgiving!!

Seeya next month yall!

Todd wasn't happy with this pic apparently

My game!

Slowly making progress on Maple Blade (that's the latest working title lol). This is the WIP title screen! The title will go overtop the cloud in the top left corner.

I've made a ton of progress on the gameplay too-- the little hub world, NPC dialogue, shop items, etc, but that's all too ugly to show off at the moment lol. The alpha version I release for Halloween is gonna be rouuggghhhh 😅

I'm jamming to:

Every year I spend a week or two with this song on repeat lol

Just, like, a really really cute pic of Kathryn:

local Abraham Lincoln fangirl found a relatable neon sign

I watched:

Fellini's Satyricon (1969), an absolute nightmare fever dream that sorta poses the question "what if the ancient past was actually completely incomprehensible to our modern minds" Every scene has new characters, in unexplained scenarios, ranting wonderful prose at each other in dubbed Italian. A guy gets thrown into a furnace. Highly recommended if you're tryna get stoned and have a minor ego death lmao

How's Trav doin:

I've been sick (with norovirus maybe?) for a little over a week, probably due to the disgusting(ly fun) Viagra Boys pit action last Thurs. Worth it. I'm gradually healing up, but everything's been slipping-- I don't do well with periods of mandatory unproductivity, and Todd the Mess Generator keeps on operating at full power. Just gotta keep ratcheting forward, little by little 🚜

Doesn't help that the USA is also currently sick, being taken over by a dictator directly censoring the media, occupying my city with masked paramilitary forces, arresting legal immigrants and putting them in prison camps, quoting Nazis at pseudo-religious political rallies, lying about medical science, declaring entire groups of people inherently enemies of the state, continuing to fund an official genocide, trying to hide his connection to a pedophile ring, etc etc.

I try to avoid talking about political crap on here, but it's getting kinda unavoidable. Anyway, I'm proud of my fellow Actual Loyal Patriotic Americans for working hard to fight this nonsense while I recover. Hope to join back in soon.

I'm thankful for:

Friends keep asking me about my birthday coming up next month :)

I'm looking forward to:

Camping with buddies up in Wisconsin again soon!!!

Seeya next month yall!

Wait did July happen??

Whoops, well, I'm still here, running around like a maniac, staring at computers and bricks all day, hugging my friends IRL when I can, and biting off more than I can chew as usual. I didn't post an update for July, so here's a long one!

I'm thankful for:

My grandma, Karen Brinks, who passed away on July 6. I'm thankful for my last memories with her-- the last time I saw her was a really good day for her and Gramps. I'm thankful that she kept a ridiculous amount of old film photos of her childhood family, her travels, and her grandkids, including this one of me and her circa 1999-ish! I'm also thankful that despite her nearly decade-long battle with Alzheimer's, she always knew who we were, and she was happy to see us. Love you Grammy.

Todd update:

Todd remains a Very Pretty Cat. Fun fact, the first thing I ever said to Todd (when I met him at the shelter) was "whoa your fur is beautiful!!" haha. Grammy also liked Todd :)

I'm jamming to:

James Ivy is so good guys. Been obsessed with his stuff since I saw him open for Porter Robinson in 2021 and he's only gotten better

Kathryn update:

She got a big promotion recently (!!!) but I feel like the bigger thing in her life was meeting this dachshund

I watched:

The John Adams HBO miniseries with Kathryn! Paul Giamatti is so good as the titular lildude that I forgot it was him-- it's a slow show, but every ep had at least one entertaining high-pitched rage-fueled tirade (from John) or a realistically-delivered direct quote from Abigail Adams, played brilliantly by uuuuuhh a lady who's good at acting, or by Washington or Jefferson, played by uuuuuh. Lotta solid actors who I never recognized (a good thing). K and I liked it!

I'm playing:

Been taking a lil break from Pokemon-- but I played Peak with Matt and Paul the other day (I died a lot lol)

I've also been making a little videogame for fun! It's an autumnal turn-based-exploration-roguelike-thing where you purify vengeful spirits in a haunted forest, and rescue the neighbor's cat :)

It's the first true procgen game I've ever made, and it's been by far the most code I've ever written! K said it's fun but she might be biased. Excited to share more about it soon-- I think it'd be fun to release a little demo around Halloween... since it's spooky... we'll see! 🎃

Citypic time:

Wildfire smoke-- bad for lungs, good for pics

I'm looking forward to:

BBQ with Steven and Hannah coming up, and camping with Tim soon!! Also more bike rides, park picnics, lake jumps, etc with buddies. We're in the panic stage of summer weeeee

Have a good August everybody! :)
